Paşaeli Çalkarası ‘Merman’

Çalkarası variety is native to Çal – Denizli. Grown a single vineyard with old vines that lies at 900 metres elevation, it is fermented with native yeast only. Barrel aged for 8 months in French oak barrels of 225 liters. A thin skinned variety with cherry red colour. The nose is delightful with aromas of sweet red fruits. Deep, sweet raspberry and wild strawberry red fruit with crisp acidity and a long fresh finish.

Paşaeli Wines built a boutique winery in Kemalpaşa near the port city of Izmir in the western part of Turkey. Total production is currently around 150.000 bottles a year. They make wines as little as 500 bottles to a maximum of 15.000 bottles per sku. Also, they have four vineyards of 15 hectares, one near the city of İzmir (close to the village of Kaynaklar), two more near the city of Tekirdağ (one close to the town of Şarköy and the other close to the village of Hoşköy) and one more near the city of Çanakkale (close to the village of Gedik). Kaynaklar and Hoşköy vineyards were planted by them but Şarköy vineyard has 50 years “old vines” of Yapıncak variety and Gedik vineyard has 35 years “old vines” of Karasakız variety. They hand harvest grapes.
