Kutman Winery History

In 1896, the purchase of one of the Murefte’s wineries by Ali Pashazadeh Ahmet Efendi, opened a new page in Kutman winemaking history. When the family took the surname Kutman, the name of the wine which is in our table for 120 years has been determined. Brothers Feyzi, Danış and Nihat took the flag over their father, and they managed to convert Kutman Wine to a family legacy. In 1977, Ahmet Adnan Kutman took the governance over his father Fevzi Kutman, and made investments concerning the vineyards and production facilities that helped the company to reach a level that can compete in world markets. Today, Feyzi Tunç Kutman is in management as a fourth-generation member of the family and wines produced with 120 years of experience and knowledge, from grapes grown in family vineyards in the town Murefte (the old name Myrafito) and in 600 square meters vineyards in İpsala, are on the world market

Kutman Vineyards

There are two important factors in wine production. The first is knowledge and experience and the second is to provide high quality grape suitable for wine. Kutman Winery is well aware of the importance of vineyards. Works not only with family members but also together with its employees who are now of the family, in order to turn the quality that comes from the vineyards into an excellent wine by using the developing technology and methods.

Kutman Winery grows the world’s primary and most preferred wine grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, successfully uses them in its wines partly as monosepage (wine produced with a single grape type), and partly as coupage (blend) and offers them to the taste of its consumers.

Various local grape species grown in different Anatolian regions also take of course their place in the blend of Kutman wines. Şenso and Karasakız species from Thrace region, Çalkarası from Denizli, Allicante from Manisa, Kalecik Karası from Ankara, Öküzgözü and Boğazkere grapes from Elazığ and Diyarbakır areas are indispensable for red wines, while Emir from Nevşehir, Sultaniye from Manisa and Semillon grapes considered now as local produce of Thrace are fundamental in the blend of Kutman White wines.

Kutman Wine Museum

Turkey’s first and only private collection of wine museum was opened in 2004 by Ahmet Adnan Kutman. Kutman family will be happy to welcome you in this historic building which is the first witness of the development of the culture we represent and carries the historical adventure of wine production in our country to present.

Ahmet Adnan Kutman, member of the third generation of the family’s wine business, developed and pursued the production in the new facilities he established himself and also started to retrieve the wineries that were divided due to inheritance issues. Lastly in 2003 he took back the first winery where the family first started the business, thus realized his lifelong dream, and he rebuilt the completely ruined building to its original state, while protecting the existing style.

 During a business trip made to Portugal in 1988, A. Adnan Kutman was present during a recital held in an old winery and he was very impressed. He said to himself that “one day we shall see this beauty in my country too” and begun to collect all the ancient machinery, instruments and documents belonging to the family. This effort took nearly 15 years to realize. You now can visit the Kutman Wine Museum where you can see the first instruments the family used in wine making, the accounting records, the land registers and population records from the 1911 Ottoman period, Mürefte’s post-earthquake pictures, as well as the art gallery composed of the paintings of the decorator and paint artist Temel Şen who participated to the restoration of the museum building.
